SoundOut Room Acoustics App app for iPhone and iPad

SoundOut is a room acoustics application, tailored to the needs of educational institutions. It offers an easy way to measure classroom background noise level, classroom ambient noise level, classroom Reverberation Time (RT) and Speech Transmission Index (STI).

Based on the measured results, general recommendations are given to teachers/school about possible solutions that would help address certain noise problems and improve the classroom acoustics in general. A “traffic lights” style indicator is used to flag the results in three categories: acceptable result = green light; borderline result = amber light; unsatisfactory result = red light. The criteria for these categories are based on reviews of published works. Note students with special needs, e.g. hearing loss, may require more stringent criteria than those adopted by this app.

Measurement records are automatically saved on the iPad for review. To review recommendations for a particular saved record, simply tap on the small traffic light on the right. Swiping a record to the left will allow user to delete that record. Multiple records (tap to select/deselect) can be sent by email as an attachment in csv format. The csv file can be imported to Microsoft Excel and other software tools for data analysis.
